 Bill 80 :  Proposed changes to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act

What is Bill 80?

Simply put, Bill 80 is the Saskatchewan Party’s attempt to destabilize the construction industry in SK and is a direct attack on Building Trades Unions.

Some of the changes that should concern you include;

    • Bill 80 will give contractors and their workers from out of the province an advantage over companies and workers from within

    • The proposed changes will allow a company NOT the worker to choose the union on a jobsite.  The alteration of trade/craft specific certifications in favour of “wall to wall” certifications preferred by “employer friendly” unions like CLAC and CEP

    • The bill will weaken the unionized apprenticeship system that is currently in place and lead to “de-skilling” of the trades in SK

    • Bill 80 will enable companies to decertify even if the workers choose not to.  Wages and benefits currently enjoyed under the current system could plummet or disappear

    • Under Bill 80, employers can undermine the collective bargaining process that has worked effectively for 17 years; why risk repeating the 80’s?

What is Local 1 SK doing about this threat?

Clarence Medernach and International Representative Graeme Aitken have made a presentation to the Legislature opposing Bill 80 and we will continue to fight to kill the proposed changes.
